Well good thing I got a lot of packing done this weekend… ahem…
People, I am leaving in T minus 3 days and 7 hours and I realized this morning, while gathering my things for my morning subway ride, that I have no book. I didn’t notice this weekend since I was spending it blissfully with Anuj, but I am about to leave to a country where I barely know anyone and I don’t even have a book to pass my evening hours! I can do a quick drive by by The Strand to pick up some second hand goodies if you guys email me some titles of good stuff you’ve read lately. Being a bookworm, I of course have a list about seven pages long of books I want to read, but I’d love a recommendation-from-a-friend.
Hook me up.
What book did you end up getting?

I REALLY liked & was INSPIRED by "The Elegant Gathering of White Snows," BUT the ladies I have loaned it to have not been that impressed, I dunno.
Let's see, "The Notebook" is a good quick read -- it is different than the movie, as it was written first.
Right now I am reading "The Power of One" about South Africa, but am not far enough into it for a recommendation. It has rave reviews though and will last you longer than the plane ride!!
Good luck my friend.

You've probably heard of these, but anything by Jared Diamond (Guns, Germs & Steel; Collapse of Civilizations) is a good long read -- also James Loewen (Lies My Teacher Told Me, Lies Across America: What Our Historic Sites Get Wrong, etc) is fun. Lipstick Jihad (forget author) was good...
